Alexandria is a great place for trails, walks, and strolls. Between the historic sites, bars, and restaurants, you can enjoy a full day while staying on your feet. If you’re looking to spend some time outdoors, consider spending some time at one of Alexandria’s many parks. Complete with different walking paths, some are even dog friendly so that you can bring your pup with you for a picnic or walk before dinner. I’ve selected a few of my favorite parks below.
Bren Mar Park
This 26-acre park is located right on the western border of Alexandria, VA. The area includes a collection of natural trails and a great play area for children. Currently, there is a large baseball field for unscheduled events. In the future, the park will also feature a brand new dog park so that your four-legged friends can get in on the fun as well.
Potomac Yard Park
The Potomac Yard Park in the neighborhood of the same name is a good place to take your kids. This park features two different gated parks for kids 5 years of age and older and for kids 5 years of age or younger. Though the water fountains and play equipment might fool you, Potomac Yard Park also walking trails nearby as well.
Mount Vernon Trail
One of the most beautiful trails in Alexandria is the Mount Vernon Trail. Stretching over 18 miles, the trail extends from George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate all the way to Theodore Roosevelt Island. The paved trail is a multi-use trail, so feel free to go for a run, a bike ride, or a walk with your pup. If walking or running, keep close to the edge – the bikers go through fast.
John Byers Park
This quaint natural park in Alexandria is a great place to relax. Originally named Williamsburg Manor Park, there are several hiking trails located nearby that run along the Little Hunting Creek that runs through the park. Although it’s a small park, there are plenty of grassy, shady areas for family picnics or energetic little ones. John Byers Park also has a basketball court and a play equipment area.
Billy Goat Trail Loop
Designed for a more adventurous outing, the Billy Goat Trail Loop is beloved for the beautiful landscape that runs along the Potomac River. Sectioned into 3 different trail options, this is a very popular destination for hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. Since it is so popular, this trail is best enjoyed on a weekday when less people are out and about and sightseeing.
